In my blog of January 20th,2025, Marijuana and Its Effect on Dental Health, I addressed some of the dental as well as negative medical effects of regular marijuana use. It now appears that marijuana, either by smoking or oral use may have some deleterious effects on cardiovascular function. In a recent study by researchers from the University of California of 55 outwardly healthy residents who either smoked marijuana or consumed edibles regularly it was shown that blood vessel function was similar to regular smokers of tobacco.
Vascular findings demonstrated that marijuana smokers were reduced by 42% and by 56% in THS-edible users compared to nonusers. Though marijuana may have some useful benefits in chronic pain patients, chemo-related nausea, those under a lot of stress, as well as helping with muscle spasms and stiffness in certain medical diseases, it is now apparent there is a tangible risk of cardiovascular events such as an increased risk of heart attacks that we did not know of.
Obviously, more long-term studies must be done in the future but be aware of possible heart issues as this study has demonstrated.
