A Brief History of Iselin

Long before it had a name, the land that became Iselin was crossed by east-west trails used by the Lenni Lenape as they traveled between the Hudson and Delaware rivers. By the 1770s, a travelers’ inn stood at the corner of Green Street and Chain O’Hills Road, and in 1780 a stagecoach line between Elizabeth and Princeton began running through the area.

The settlement went by several names over the years, first Perrytown and later Unionville or Uniontown. A railroad stop arrived in 1836, and transportation has shaped the community ever since. In 1872, New York banker and railroad executive Adrian Iselin purchased property here to open the Adrian Institute, a private academy for young women on Bloomfield Avenue. Soon after, the local train station was renamed in his honor, and the town took on the name it carries today.

The 20th century brought new kinds of travel. In 1925, Shinn-Woodbridge Airport opened on 72 acres at the corner of Oak Tree Road and Wood Avenue. After World War II, a former Army pilot bought the field and turned it into a hub for private aircraft and flight lessons. As suburban growth swept through central New Jersey in the postwar years, homes and neighborhoods filled in around the old farmland.

In 1971, Metropark station opened as a regional rail center, connecting Iselin to New York and Philadelphia. In the decades that followed, Oak Tree Road grew into one of the most vibrant Indian American business districts in the country, giving Iselin the rich cultural identity it is known for today.
